U.S. military forces thwarted a barrage of attacks originating from Yemen and Iran, intercepting over 80 Iranian drones and successfully neutralizing at least six ballistic missiles aimed at Israel.
According to a statement from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation saw collaboration between U.S. European Command destroyers and other U.S. forces. They engaged and eliminated more than 80 one-way attack uncrewed aerial vehicles (OWA UAVs) and intercepted six ballistic missiles.
The statement highlighted a particularly significant interception: a ballistic missile on its launcher vehicle and seven UAVs were destroyed on the ground in Iranian-backed Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen before they could be launched. It condemned Iran’s “unprecedented, malign, and reckless behavior” for jeopardizing regional stability and the safety of U.S. and coalition forces.
Emphasizing readiness, CENTCOM pledged ongoing support for Israel’s defense against such threats. The commitment extends to collaborative efforts with regional partners to bolster regional security.
On a separate note, the tension escalated further as Iran launched a barrage of over 300 missiles and drones at Israel from its own territory. Israel, however, asserts that its advanced defense systems, along with support from regional allies, largely foiled the attack.
Following the intense engagement, President Biden personally commended the valor and dedication of the 494th and 335th fighter squadrons during a phone call.
“Hey, you guys are truly the best in the whole world, man. The whole world,” Biden exclaimed. “That’s not an exaggeration, man. Both these squadrons. You’re incredible. Absolutely incredible. You’ve made an immense difference, potentially saving countless lives.”
In response, Lieutenant Colonel Curtis Culver, commander of the 494th Fighter Squadron, expressed gratitude for the president’s acknowledgment, stating that he and his squadron members were “mighty proud” to have played their part.
“You’re just amazing,” Biden praised. “I’m sorry for my exuberance. I’m supposed to maintain more composure.”
“No need to apologize, sir,” Lt. Culver replied. “Proud to serve our country.”
In a final gesture, Biden conveyed his deep pride in Lt. Culver and the entire fighter squadrons, reaffirming their significance in shaping his pride as an American.
